Spring Is Planning Time for Juniors and Seniors

2012 has finally arrived. It's time for Seniors to get serious about finding money to pay for college and for Juniors to get serious about picking a college and taking SATs and ACTs.
With all of the budget cuts in education this year, I don't think juniors can count on a waiver to take a free SAT or ACT this spring. However, they should still register to take one of them or both of them by June. Students who wait until their senior year are at risk of missing application deadlines for both colleges and scholarships.
Seniors should already be accepted to their colleges of choice, or at least have an application submitted. All of our seniors have submitted at least one application to Victoria College, and many are now anticipating acceptance letters from other campuses as well. Now it's time to plan for how to pay for that education. We are hosting a FAFSA information session February 2 at 6:00, so mark your calendars. Meanwhile, start educating yourself about the FAFSA by visiting Fastweb.com, Collegeboard.org, and FAFSA.gov and reading their informative articles. Another source that is new to me is FinAid.org.
Also, step up the process of filling out those scholarship applications. If you haven't kept up with the scholarship list on the ATISD Facebook page, do so now and check back often. The list grows weekly this time of year. The more scholarships you apply for, the better the odds. Resources like Fastweb.com and Collegeboard.org both have informative articles about how to apply for scholarships and write essays that win.
As local scholarships come through the counseling office, I will post them on the Facebook page. I will also hand out copies and make students sign as proof of receipt. In order to conserve resources and practice being green, only one copy per student will be provided, so don't loose them! Most applications can also be accessed online if you need a second copy.
Many applications require at least one recommendation letter. Recommendation letters are best when written by someone who knows you personally. When asking someone to write a letter for you, always provide a stamped/addressed envelope for them as a courtesy. Also, give them plenty of time to write the letter. Asking for a recommendation letter the day before your deadline is not fair to your letter writer, and they may refuse to do it if they feel they do not have enough time to devote to writing a good letter. If you need a letter from the counseling office, you will be required to fill out a request for it and provide information about yourself. Requests for counselor recommendation letters must be submitted at least one week before the deadline.
One last thing to remember, scholarships and colleges both ask for transcripts. If you need a transcript sent to a college or scholarship committee, you must fill out a request and provide the correct mailing address. Transcripts are considered confidential information and cannot be released without your approval. Students under 18 must have a parent signature on the request. Requests can be found outside of the counseling office.

this easy list of do’s and don’ts for writing
your admission essay.

Do
• Brainstorm ideas before you
write. Choose the idea that best
fits you, and a topic that you feel
will be unique to the other thousands
of essays that the admissions
officers will read.
• Choose a topic that is specific.
Doing so will allow you to
go in-depth into one idea rather
than trying to cover a broad topic
with a short essay. The more indepth
you go, the more unique
your essay will be.
• Write multiple drafts of
your essay and get feedback
on each one from a parent or
friend. This will help ensure you
cover the topic well, and give you
the chance to choose the best of
your work.
• Write as well as you can, edit
the document and get help if
needed. Use a mixture of sharp
adjectives and smart wit without
sounding too terse, verbose or
ostentatious (SAT words!).
Don’t
• Don’t choose offensive topics.
Topics that may be offensive
are those that surround religion,
racism and even personal opinions
on world issues. You won’t be
doing yourself any favors if your
essay leaves the admissions officer
feeling offended or angry.
• Don’t let anyone else dictate
the topic of your essay. You can
get help brainstorming if you
want, but don’t write about someone
else’s chosen topic.
• Don’t write a negative essay.
The more positive you are with
the topic, the more enjoyable
the essay will be to read. Avoid
negative topics and negative ideas
within the body of the essay.
• Don’t be arrogant or pedantic
with your writing. The
admissions officers will see it, and
arrogance will work against you
in the admissions process.

Find out what’s available
Make your search thorough and ambitious. The
Internet, local library, your school, local businesses and
service organizations all offer opportunities to locate many
different types of awards. And some of these awards can be
for large sums of money with very little competition simply
because people don’t know they are available.

Tap into the Web
There are several large Internet-based scholarship
databases, such as nextSTEPmag.com/Scholarships, that
match your personal profile to potential scholarships.
These databases list hundreds of thousands of awards. The
number of criteria you enter varies by site and may be
limited, so it’s worth a shot to alter your personal profile.
The database may find additional scholarships for you that
it may not have with previous search criteria.

Check with your high school guidance office
Many scholarship committees mail their application
materials straight to your high school! Most schools have
a scholarship file available, so ask! Also check with the
schools that you wish to attend, as many of them offer
scholarships and grants that may not pop up in the
databases or in your high school.

Canvas your community
The local library should have scholarship directories
listing awards, too. Also check with local businesses
and service organizations, as many of them may have
awards available to students in the local community. Have
your mom and dad check with their employers; some
organizations offer awards to children of their employees.

Apply
Once you’ve found as many
scholarships as you can that you are eligible for, start
applying. Put the applications in order by deadline and
apply for as many as possible, even if the award amount
seems small or your chances seem slim. Even a few small
awards will shrink your college costs.

Stay organized
Keep track of your submissions so that you make
deadlines and have all your materials together.

Prepare well
Finally, prepare for any interview portions of your
applications. Be ready to answer questions about your
background, achievements, goals, finances and values.
Remember that good social skills go a long way, from the
introductory handshake to the thank-you note after the
interview.

The University of Houston’s Fall 2012 application is available online, and the new priority deadline for admissions is December 1. As our university became a Tier 1 Research University , we have moved to higher admissions standards as well.
Automatic admission will be given to those students who are in the top 15 percent of their graduating class and to students who are in the top 16-25 percent of their class who also have a minimum of a 1000 SAT (critical reading and math) or a 21 ACT composite or the 26-50 percent of their class with a 1100 or 24 on the ACT, but students must complete their file by December 1! After December 1, all students that are not in the top 10 percent of their graduating class will be individually reviewed.
UH will accept applications, high school transcripts, application fees, and SAT/ACT scores until April 1. Students may monitor their file at http://myUH.uh.edu.

University of Texas Automatic Admission Changes for 2013

Senate Bill 175, passed by the 81st Texas Legislature, allows The University of Texas at Austin to limit automatic admission to 75 percent of the university’s enrollment capacity designated for first-time resident undergraduate students beginning with admissions for the 2011-12 academic year.

The University has determined that it will automatically admit all eligible 2013 summer/fall freshman applicants who rank within the top 8 percent of their high school graduating classes, with remaining spaces to be filled through holistic review.

In these difficult economic conditions, students can use all the help they can get paying for college. For this reason, TG — the company that brings you Counselors Network — is proud to announce the availability of the 2011-12 Milton G. Wright Scholarship. Starting November 1, 2011, TG will allow students to enter online to receive one of 12 monthly $500 scholarship awards.
To enter the drawing, students will need to complete a registration form (www.aie.org/milt-wright-scholarship) that gathers basic information for contact and eligibility verification. Winners of the $500 scholarship will be selected shortly after the end of the month, and notified by email.

Victoria College Campus Tour November 9

Michael O’Malley, MD, Scholarship

The year 2012 marks the nineteenth time that the Texas Medical Association’s Young Physician Section will award its rural science scholarship. This $1,000award is given to a rural Texas high school senior who excels in science, for use toward continuing his or her education in the field of medicine.

In 2007, the YPS Rural Scholarship was transformed into a memorial scholarship for Michael O’Malley, MD. Dr. O’Malley, a recipient of a similar scholarship himself, was an internal medicine physician in Galvestonand past chair of the TMA Young Physician Section. Tragically, Dr. O’Malley died from cardiac arrest in his home at the age of 43 and left a wife and two young children. In his memory, the young physicians’ are continuing the tradition of helping rural highschool seniors pursue a degree in the field of medicine.

All outstandingrural high school seniors interested in pursuing their education and becoming a physicianare invited to apply for this award. The application form and submission details are available in the counseling office.

Applications must be postmarked byJanuary 13, 2011 and sent via mail to: Texas Medical Association, YPS Coordinator, 401 West 15th Street, Austin, TX 78701. KFC Colonel's Scholars

Texas Exes Scholarships for Future Longhorn Hopefuls

Texas Exes Scholarship Foundation annually awards nearly $2 million to over 700 students attending The University of Texas at Austin.

Scholarships are open to all students – parents do not need to be alumni of The University of Texas at Austin nor do they have to be members of the Texas Exes. Current high school seniors interested in attending the University are eligible for the following scholarships:

• Forty Acres Scholars Program: Our newest scholarship program, the Forty Acres Scholars Program is a four-year, full-ride merit scholarship to recruit and recognize the best students. Coastal Bend Community Foundation Announces Online Scholarship Application

CBC Foundation announces the launch of its online scholarship application. Effective in 2012, students applying for scholarships previously listed on the Combined Application for Multiple Scholarships will now be required to complete an online application. G/T Nominations Are Now Being Accepted

ATISD parents who wish to nominate their student to the Gifted and Talented Program may pick up a nomination form in either of the school offices. Nominations are due November 1. After November 1, no nominations will be accepted.

Students who were assessed for Gifted and Talented in Spring of 2011 are not eligible for nomination this fall. They will be eligible for nomination in Fall of 2012.

All of Kinder and any Gifted and Talented nominees will be assessed during the week of November 14-18.

The Gifted and Talented Committee will make their decisions and mail out letters to the nominees before the Christmas Holidays.

Voice of Democaracy Contest

During the past few years the Refugio chapter of the Veterans of Foreign Wars have given thousands of dollars in scholarships to Austwell-Tivoli High School seniors. Our school has been well represented over the years. In order to qualify for the scholarships, seniors must compete in the Voice of Democracy Essay Contest. The deadline is Friday, October 28 so that the essay can reach the VFW before November1. See Mrs. Mutschler for the entry form.
The Veterans of Foreign Wars also sponsors and essay contest for Junior High students. Savings bonds awards range from $1000 to $10,000. It is important that young Americans be able to verbalize patriotism because freedom is not free. Applications are available from Ms. Tate and Mrs. Gyllenband. The essay deadline is Friday, October 28.

First Freedom Student Competition National Essay and Video Contest

The First Freedom Center announces the 19th annual First Freedom Student Competition. This national essay and video contest offers 9th - 12th grade students an opportunity to compete for $2,500 awards as they examine the First Amendment and the history and implementation of religious freedom and freedom of conscience in American democracy and the world today.
This year, students will select a person and/or group in their community, state or region, whose present or historic rights to the free exercise of belief are accommodated or, on the other hand, challenged by the public schools. They will then research and analyze how this relates to the broader narrative of First Amendment law and the right to freedom of religion, conscience or belief in the United States. Students will research history, current events, and the impact of the First Amendment in order to make their assessment. Writing effective admissions essays

You may be avoiding starting your college applications or research assignments because you don't like writing. However, because effective writing will play a significant role in the admissions process, it is important that you tackle the task head on. Allow yourself plenty of time. Remember, writing out your thoughts can help you develop them. Writing isn’t just a matter of neatly expressing ideas you’ve already had. You’re also likely to think of things in new ways during the writing process.
An important thing to remember is that your college admissions essay will only be one part of your full application — there are many other factors that admissions officers will consider to determine whether you will be successful at their school. Your essay will complement the other components of your application.
One of the purposes of the essay is for the college to learn more about you as a person through the way you express yourself in writing. For that reason, a personal story about your own experiences might be a good way to frame or support your main point. Another reason that schools request essays is that they help admissions officers to evaluate your organizational and critical thinking skills. For that reason, you should make sure your ideas follow logically.
Most applications that request an essay offer you at least two options for topics you may write about. Choose the topic that you have more interest in, and try to prepare an essay that shows your uniqueness and individualism. Although it is important to show your knowledge, try to write in a way that is clear, focused, and in your own voice. If you include too many “SAT words,” complex sentences, and abstract language, you may actually hurt your chances.
Many college admissions officers find that the essay gives them a chance to see the "student behind the application," particularly if the school does not require an admissions interview. Concentrate on showing the reader "the real you," and your essay might generate enough interest for selection, or at least further consideration.

1. Start searching for scholarships as soon as possible. Don't
wait until the spring of your senior year in high school to
start searching, or you'll miss half the deadlines. There are
many scholarships available to students in grades K-11, not
just high school seniors. Continue searching for
scholarships even after you are enrolled in college.
2. Use a free scholarship matching service like Fastweb.com.
The Fastweb database is updated daily and the site will
email you notifications of new scholarships that match your
personal background profile.
3. Answer all of the optional questions on a scholarship
matching web site for about twice as many matches.

talented students, winning involves a bit of luck, not just
skill. Pursue less competitive scholarships, such as small
awards and essay contests. They are easier to win and help
you win bigger scholarships. You can't win if you don't
apply. It gets easier after your first 6 applications. Essays
can be reused and tailored to each new application.
6. Don't miss deadlines. Use checklists to get organized.
7. Tailor your application to the sponsor's goals. Read and
follow the instructions carefully.
8. If you have difficulty writing essays, record yourself as you
answer the question out loud and transcribe the recording.
Most people think and speak faster than they can write or
type. Write an outline afterward to organize your thoughts.
9. Personalize your essay and be passionate. Write about
something of interest to you. Make your application stand
out from the crowd. Talk about your impact on other
people. Give examples and be specific.
10. Google your name to ensure that you have a professional
online presence. Use a clean email address, such as
firstname.lastname@gmail.com. Review your Facebook
account, removing inappropriate and immature material.
11. Proofread a printed copy of your essay and the application
for spelling and grammar errors.

The Only Thing That's Permanent is Change

Imagine you're a candle maker in the late 1800s. Thanks to your willingness to embrace new technology, your paraffin wax candles smell better and are more efficient than the once-popular tallow candles (made from rendered beef or mutton fat). Demand is high. Your future looks bright...right up until some inventor named Edison changes everything with his improvements to the filament light bulb. Things change, and some changes are likely to affect your career plans.
With that in mind, a recent Popular Science article on the "10 Best Jobs of the Future" might be interesting food for thought. While any claims to predict the future should be taken with a grain of salt, is it out of the question that you may someday be interviewing for a position as a space pilot, organ designer, or fusion worker? Plenty of jobs people are doing right now didn't exist at all just a few decades (or even years) ago.
One good habit of mind is to think broadly about skill sets that aren't industry-specific. Creativity, lateral thinking, and problem-solving skills are going to be very important in the changing workplace, argues Daniel Pink in his book A Whole New Mind. For example, a journalism degree used to lead directly to working as a print journalist. These days, the newspaper and magazine industries are undergoing rapid change, and writers must adapt their skills to new media in new ways. Knowing how to work in the newspaper industry doesn't offer the job security it once did, but the fast-changing world of communication does need people who are good writers and good thinkers.
That approach might apply to any number of fields. Another way of thinking about this topic is to look into the fast-changing fields from which new markets are likely to emerge. If you'd been a computer programmer when that occupation was young, you'd have tremendous bargaining power. Why? Because demand for your skills was high, and supply was low. What fields of study are going to lead to amazing new careers in bioengineering, green technology, new approaches to education, or international trade in a fast-shrinking world?
Along these lines, here are some more questions for your consideration: Do you think physical textbooks will continue to dominate the education market? Fifty years from now, will most people still be commuting to work in vehicles that burn fossil fuels? In the way that vinyl records were largely replaced by CDs, which have been largely replaced by digital downloads, what massive changes are coming next in the world of media? Where will you fit in to the new reality as it emerges?

Exploring your school options

When selecting a college or university, consider these things:

How much does it cost to get an education at that particular college?

How do you figure out the answers to these questions? A good place to start is the Internet. You can find out a lot about a college or university through its Web site. Some even offer virtual tours.
In addition to the Web, other valuable information is available from many other sources. Ask your high school counselor or librarian for college guidebooks. They're an easy way to gather information about numerous colleges and universities in one resource. A number of guidebooks are also available on the Web.
Attend college fairs. Talk to your high school counselor, or contact a local college admissions office to find out if any college fairs are scheduled for your area.
Talk to your family, friends, and relatives. Do you know anyone who went to a school you're considering? They can tell you about their experiences and give you valuable firsthand insight.
Contact the admissions offices of the schools on your list and ask for catalogs, applications, and any other information they have about attendance (costs, financial aid, housing, graduation rates, and placement rates are a good place to start).
Check into visiting the schools on your list. See if you can meet with an admissions counselor. Call the admissions office to find out about college tours and a convenient time to visit with a counselor or admissions officer.
When you visit, take some time to look around without a guide. See what the school is like beyond the tour. Talk to students on campus. Try to get a feel for the place. And find out if you can visit the dorms while you're there as well.

Students and Parents Should Seek Most Value for What They Borrow

As Texas high school seniors began receiving financial aid offers from the state’s colleges and universities, many no doubt noticed this year’s offers include more loans than those of previous years. Why? Because we are in the midst of significant changes as the Texas Legislature responds to calls for substantial cuts in state government.

While the legislature has not yet made final decisions about funding levels for our state’s financial aid programs, the state budget passed by the House of Representatives on April 3 would cut Texas’ financial aid programs by 39% to 78% for the next two years.

Unfortunately, these cuts would disproportionately affect new freshmen. The House-passed budget includes no appropriations for state aid to Texans who begin college during the next two years. As a result, Texas colleges have not been able to include any state financial aid in the offers they are sending students. The Senate is now considering its version of the state budget, and the legislature is expected to finalize the state budget by May 30, so there is still a slim hope that Texas colleges and universities will be able to send revised financial aid offers that include state aid sometime in June. But unless Senate action results in alterations to the House plan, it is likely that the next two years will see thousands of new Texas college students who receive no state grants or scholarships—even if they are otherwise eligible for them.
If such cuts in Texas’ student aid programs come about, more students and parents will need to borrow more to realize the dream of attending college. Is it worth it to borrow in order to earn a college degree? Yes. Even in these difficult economic times, Americans with bachelor’s degrees still enjoy above-average wages and below-average unemployment (U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics. Education Pays. May 27, 2010.) Moreover, the federal student loan programs on which most Texas educational borrowers rely offer relatively low fixed interest rates, options for postponing payments while in school, and flexible repayment plans to help keep monthly payments low after graduation.
Still, student and parents should carefully consider several key issues as they make college choices that will have to be paid for with loans:
Have we pursued all of the grants and scholarships available to us? No family should miss out on opportunities for grants, so all families should complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) on an annual basis. They should also aggressively search for scholarships every year through reputable sources. Many colleges and universities post scholarship opportunities on electronic bulletin boards such as UT Austin’s Texas Scholarships.org.
Can the student help minimize a family's reliance on loans by working part-time while enrolled? Research shows that working 15 or fewer hours per week—especially on-campus or in positions related to students’ academic interests—positively impact persistence and degree completion (American Council on Education. Working Their Way Through College: Student Employment and Its Impact on the College Experience. May 2006. ). UT Austin’s Hirealonghorn and similar websites at other schools frequently post new student employment opportunities, both on and off-campus.
How much do a family really need to cover college expenses? It is in the best interest of both students and parents to borrow what is necessary, but to never borrow frivolously. Families and their students should budget carefully so they borrow to meet needs, not wants. Remember, if students use debt to live like professionals while in school, their debts will force them to live like students after graduation.
If a family is going to have to borrow more for college, are they borrowing to attend a college or university where they will get the most value for what they borrow? Low tuition and fees during the freshman year are one of many important considerations, but families should also find out:

How much tuition and fees are increasing at institutions they are considering. College Navigator, a U.S. Department of Education website, shows how much these charges have risen at individual colleges and universities over the last few years.
What percentage of an institution’s freshmen reenroll for the sophomore year, and what percentage eventually graduate. These data provide an indication of how satisfied students are once they enroll in various institutions. Again, College Navigator can provide information on individual institutions. The average graduation rate in the state of Texas is 49% (National Center for Higher Education Management Systems. Graduation Rates. 2009.), although students at many of our state’s institutions graduate at far higher rates.
How highly the institution and its academic departments are ranked. Rankings matter, especially for students planning to go on to graduate school, law school, or medical school.
How much graduates of the college or university earn—right out of school and several years later. Consult recent graduates, contact college and university career centers, and look for studies about this in the media.

A bachelor’s degree is still one of the best investments Texas students and their families can make, and they should not be afraid to borrow in order to get such degrees—provided they choose colleges and universities where they get the greatest value for what they borrow.
